There’s something unmistakably special about the glow of Christmas lights on a quiet December night. That first deep breath of crisp winter air, the soft hush of snowfall, the cozy warmth that comes from gathering with the people who matter most. It’s a season that invites reflection and celebration, comfort and connection. In our home, it’s a time filled with long-held traditions, simple pleasures, and so much love.

We begin Christmas Eve at church, where the stillness of candlelight and the gentle swell of music set the tone for the night. There’s a peace I feel during that service that stays with me. It centres me. It reminds me why this season holds such significance.

Our Family’s Traditions

Once we return home from church, the pace slows and the house fills with the scent of our festive dinner. We sit around the table and enjoy comfort food, conversation, and the kind of laughter that comes easily when you’re surrounded by family. After dinner, we change into cozy clothes, turn on a few Christmas classics, and settle in for a movie marathon. The same titles make the list every year, and I wouldn’t have it any other way without seeing “A Year Without A Santa Claus” and “A Christmas Story”.

The sound of Christmas carols is another thing that brings me joy throughout the season. I find myself humming along without realizing it, whether I’m driving, cooking, or just relaxing. That constant background of familiar melodies has a way of lifting my spirits, even on the busiest days.

Christmas morning is filled with warmth and wonder. The last couple of years have been a little different. Rachel and Lauren are now a little older, and they no longer run excitedly into our room on Christmas morning to wake us up. Instead, we get to sleep in a little and then we wake them up! We all take our time getting ready, and then we head downstairs to open presents and spend some quality family time together. The order may have changed, but the special moments are still there. Their delight is still contagious. These are the moments that stay with me long after the decorations are packed away.

Comforts and Small Surprises

Christmas morning also means cinnamon rolls, freshly baked by Wendy. They’re warm, soft, and just the right amount of sticky. Alongside a mug of coffee with a splash of Baileys, it’s one of my favourite parts of the day.

Storm, our ever-curious furry companion, has her own routine. She knows there’s something hidden under the tree just for her, and she’s determined to find it. We tuck a few special treats in wrapping paper, and we hide several doggy biscuits around the room, just to keep her on her toes. It’s a tradition that adds a little extra fun to the morning.

Me and my Drum

Every year, I find myself drawn to certain Christmas songs. This year, it is the Little Drummer Boy. There’s something deeply moving about the message. A boy who brings what he has, his music and the gift of kindness, because it’s the only gifts he can offer. It’s a beautiful reminder that intention and heart matter more than anything else.

Sean Quigley’s rendition of Little Drummer Boy is unlike any other. It’s raw, passionate, and filled with sincerity. He filmed it on the snowy streets of Winnipeg, playing all the instruments himself. You can feel the emotion in every beat. That version continues to be one of my favourites. It captures everything that makes the song so powerful and meaningful.
