Why Being a Parent is So Stressful
10 Nov 2020
Some call it the best job in the world, but let’s be honest, being a parent comes with its fair share of stress! From the moment we bring children into our lives, everything becomes different. We are suddenly responsible for these little human beings and catering to every one of their needs becomes our number one priority. The mental load of being depended on is huge, and can sometimes feel stressful, exhausting and worrying.
Lack of Sleep
As a parent, we never switch off. The worry is constant with kids. Are they eating enough? Hitting the right milestones? Are they happy? It’s a wonder we will ever sleep again! Not to mention the fact that children do not sleep consistently, especially at a younger age. This has a knock-on effect on your own sleep patterns and life can be more of a struggle when we are sleep deprived.
Sometimes, relationships can become strained when you have a family. A change in how life was before is to be expected, but can also sometimes come as a big shock. The time you once had as a couple will become less. That is why it is important to try and make time for your relationship from time to time. Still have date nights, or the odd weekend away if you have a willing babysitter on hand. Make sure you talk to your partner, especially when you have concerns regarding your children. It is important to make sure you work together and share the responsibility.
Your financial situation will, of course, change when you have a family. This can be worrying for some people and add a lot of stress. You may not have the kind of spare money that you used to have, and priorities may have to change. Try and look at ways to save money. Second-hand children’s items are sometimes barely used and can help make great savings. Days out do not have to be expensive. Spending time together as a family will make your child far happier than having the latest toy.
Look After Yourself
You matter too. You cannot do your best job as a parent unless you are being kind to yourself. It is important to take the time to still do the things you enjoy. At the end of the day, whether you want to collapse in front of the TV, read a book, or log on to one of the best online poker sites Canada has to offer, the choice is yours. Do not be afraid of taking an hour or two for self-care though; you deserve it after all! Raising children is a difficult and important role, and you can do that better if you are rested and relaxed yourself.
It is important to know that feeling stressed as a parent is completely normal. Most, if not all, of us will feel it at some point. It does not make you a failure. In fact, it shows that you care, love and worry about your children and want to do the very best by them.
