Using The Internet The Right Way
08 Aug 2018
Learning is something we all do in our own ways. Whether we prefer a hands on approach, getting all messy and technical, or we prefer to sit back and write down all the information we need for referencing later, we absorb knowledge in different ways. And thanks to the internet, it’s easier than ever to get to know something, so let’s make sure we’re using it in the right way!
The world wide web is a big place, as the name tells us. But there’s so much out there you can learn from, and there’s a lot more reliable sources than Wikipedia! So why not put these sites and sources to the test, and bolster your knowledge of any subject, from Llamas to Ancient Chinese Civilisations; the limits are endless! Here’s a couple of tips to get you started on your Googling rabbit hole…
It can be accessed anytime and from anywhere, so use it!
Get in a Habit of Checking Sources
If you’re someone who reads the news and hate what you see, make sure you’re reading the articles properly. A lot of misinformation can be spread by a title, and often enough that’s all people pay attention to. If you don’t like what a certain piece of media is saying to you, make sure you open it up and see what’s actually on offer; usually, the title was lying to you.
At the same time, make sure you follow up on any of the ‘sources’ listed in the article, and see if they’ve been misquoted or taken out of context. Make sure you’re not being drawn into a fake news rabbithole in your quest to learn more about the world, and choose to define what exactly that term means in your own way whilst you’re at it!
Look For Educational Programs
If you really want to benefit from using the internet, make sure you’re on the lookout for educational courses and the like to really bolster your self improvement efforts. Whatever it is you’re interested in, whether it’s engineering and all its intricacies or you want to know more about the Boxer Rebellion, or maybe you want something a little more technical like courses related to operations management, there’s going to be a course with a certificate for you to earn at the end.
Put that on your CV and you’ve just improved your efforts of finding a new job or earning a pay raise by at least 20%!
Look For Influencers
It’s something the social media platforms tend to have a monopoly on, so make sure you’re finding the groups of people you like and joining in with them. It’s nice to have a community of like minded people on your feed or in your contacts to chat to, and the internet has a lot to offer you when it comes to finding someone to follow that has quirks, talents, or a mindset you enjoy.
Using the internet the right way is a privilege you should use!
