Men can’t live without food. According to Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, food falls under physiological needs and is considered fundamental. In fact, it will take only eight to 21 days for someone to live and survive without food. Needless to say, eating is necessary for the human body.

Modern cuisines, however, have evolved. People from all over the world now love to explore their dishes. Thanks to ready-made condiments at every household’s disposal, they make food preparation a lot easier and their flavors a lot better!

So what makes a condiment then? It is something that adds flavour or enhances the taste of food. Whether it’s incorporated during food preparation or added when eating, a condiment makes a world of difference in a meal.
If you’re wondering what to stock in your kitchen, here are the top condiments in the world:

1. Salt

Salt is the primary household staple. It is considered the king of seasonings and condiments in the kitchen. Whether you fry an egg, boil pasta, or cook a steak, you need to sprinkle some salt. When it comes to food enhancement, nothing beats salt.

2. Soy Sauce

An alternative to salt is soy sauce, which can be salty as well. It is made of soybeans, wheat, salt, and fermenting agents (mold or yeast). However, it comes in various kinds. There are Chinese and Japanese versions of it. If you live in Hawaii, it’s called shoyu sauce. While it serves as an all-purpose seasoning, it’s best served on the side as well.

3. Vinegar

Next to soy sauce is vinegar. Whether Filipino coconut vinegar for sauce, balsamic vinegar for salad dressing, or malt vinegar as a condiment for fish and chips, vinegar does work wonders on your food. It is indeed the most diverse condiment in your kitchen used for anything, from marinades to dressing.

4. Fish Sauce

Fish sauce is exactly what it is – a fish fermented with salt and turned into sauce. But did you know that it is deemed a secret ingredient to the best burgers in the world? This is because it adds layers of depth to burgers. But in East and Southeast Asian cuisines, it is considered a staple seasoning commonly found in the kitchen.

5. Barbecue Sauce

Of course, who doesn’t love barbecues? But those grilled ribs or steaks won’t taste delicious without a barbecue sauce. This golden sauce has a perfect combination of sweet and salty taste that’s palatable to the taste buds. It can be used for marinade, basting, or topping for meat.

6. Ketchup

Ketchup is considered an essential condiment around the world. This tomato-sugar paste goes well with almost everything, from burgers to scrambled eggs down to fries. It has a sweet taste and a tangy odor, ideal for enhancing the food’s flavor.

7. Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise is regarded as the favorite condiment in the U.S. In fact, it has toppled ketchup as a favorite one. This thick creamy dressing consists of egg yolks beaten and seasoned with oil and vinegar. It is typically used for hamburgers, sandwiches, salads, and French fries.

8. Salsa

Did you know that the word ‘salsa’ literally translates to ‘sauce’? No, we aren’t talking about the dancing salsa. We talk about salsa as a condiment. In America, it refers to a condiment made of tomatoes, onions, and chilies. It can be a healthy addition to your balanced diet, as this sauce is low in calories with minimal to low fat.

9. Wasabi

Wasabi is a spicy green paste served as a condiment to all forms of sushi. It is made of a natural wasabi plant or horseradish, radishes, and mustard as alternatives. This green paste sitting next to your California roll has a pungent yet delicate flavor. Some love it, while a few others can’t stand tasting it. Give it a try and see if you can bear the taste!

10. Relish

The last on the list is relish, a condiment with secretly chopped-up pickles. However, relish can also be made of other fruits and vegetables. The idea is to mix certain fruits and veggies with salt, vinegar, and herbs. When prepared properly, you can relish a perfect balance between sweet and tart. It can be used as a condiment or salsa to boost a staple.

So there you have it – the top condiments in the world! There’s a lot more to a condiment than meet the eye – or the tongue, for that matter. Whether it’s plain salt, fish sauce, ketchup, or relish, a condiment can spice up your food. Ultimately, food with a perfect condiment will make you satisfied or even leave you asking for more!
