Food Tour: A Taste Of Burlington Summer 2019 Prix Fixe Program
02 Aug 2019
One of the great things about a food tour is you get to try restaurants that you may have not already been to. Burlington has a fantastic food scene, with varying types of food. The Taste of Burlington Prix Fixe summer dining program is a great way to try some of the restaurants you may not have been to, art an affordable price. As well, a lot of these restaurants use the prix fixe event to test out new dishes.
Our tour consisted of 4 restaurants and a craft brewery.
Barra Fíon Tapas & Barrel
Our first stop on the tour was Barra Fíon Tapas & Barrel. I had never been to Barra Fion before this, but my wife Wendy had with some friends. She raved about the atmosphere and the food, so I had some pretty high expectations.
Barra Fion is part of the Gators Restaurant family, with Gators being just a few doors down in the same plaza.
Michelle, owner of Barra Fion, spoke about the items we were about to eat, and explained that the items were not currently offered at the restaurant. She often uses the Taste Of Burlington event to try new creative menu items, and if they are popular, then they are added to the menu. Great way to ensure you have a menu that your clientele loves!
We started off with house made Sangria. So refreshing!
Next up was Shrimp Ceviche with Chips. This was probably the most enjoyable shrimp ceviche I have ever had!
Our next dish was Smoked Duck and Spring Salad. Very tasty!
Next, our server brought over this massive board of items that included Roast Chicken, Beef Kabobs, Garlic Parmesan Potatoes, Chicken Wings, and Mexican Dirty Rice. Everything was delicious!
The next dish was Roast Beef Bruschetta. So good!
Our last dish was Curried Chickpea Tacos. Now normally, I am not one for tacos without some kind of meat, but these were amazing! Full of flavour, and just the right amount of spice.
Just when we thought we were done, Gator Ted himself hopped on board our bus and gave us all a serving of his famous Fish and Chips! The fish was crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside. The fries were thick cut. Yummy!

Canyon Creek Chophouse
Still stuffed from the food at our first stop, we headed to Canyon Creek Chophouse for more. They had a ton of food waiting for us!
Ahi Tuna Bean Salad…
Coffee Crusted Steak…
Roasted Pork Chop…
and Atlantic Salmon.
While there were many dishes served, the Signature Aged Prime Rib was my favourite. So tender and juicy!
Small but mighty, these Smores crème brûlée were a couple small bites of heaven for this camping Dad!

Nickel Brook Brewing Co.
A mid way stop on the food tour for a cold one? Heck yes! Nickel Brook Brewing Co. was our next stop, a local craft brewery in the heart of Burlington.
I left with a growler of Naughty Neighbour American-Style Pale Ale for Wendy, and a 6-pack of Naughty Nick’s Ginger Beer for me.
The Tap Room is fairly new, having only opened in December 2018. It is a great space for tastings, events, or just to stop in to try before you buy.

While many locals would know The Dickens for their live music and great draft selection, not many think of it as a place to get some great comfort food.
We got a chance to sample some of the “not yet on the menu” items that will be featured during Taste Of Burlington.
I’m a sucker for Tempura Shrimp. Comes with Hoisin sauce for dipping.
These Chicken Fingers were fantastic! Real chicken, and real good!
The “soon to be popular” Hangover Poutine. Fries, beef, cheese, ketchup, garlic aioli, with an over easy egg on top. Sure to cure any hangover!
The Thai Noodle Bowl is a great option if you want something other than your typical pub food.
And nothing says comfort like Baked Mac and Cheese.
The Dickens is located at:
423 Elizabeth St, Burlington, ON L7R 2L8
By the time we got to Pepperwood Bistro, I was stuffed! We had so many great dishes, none of which we wanted to say no to. Looking over the menu they planned on serving during the Taste Of Burlington Prix Fixe menu event, I found several items I would order in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I had hit my food capacity for the evening, and didn’t try any of the dishes. We were served a rustic pizza and some pasta, which the folks at my table said was really good.
