Start your day off right! #NewBDK
16 Apr 2014
A few weeks ago, I arrived at my gym for my daily workout. I was surprised to see an ambulance in the parking lot. As I went into the gym, the paramedics were tending to one of the members, who was seated in the waiting area.
I didn’t stop to ask any questions or lurk around (because that is the last thing anyone needed). So I headed to the change room to get ready.
As I walked out of the change room, I heard one of the paramedics ask the guy “so what did you have to eat this morning?” His response? “Nothing”.
I headed over to meet Mike, my trainer, to start our workout. I didn’t want to be the gossip king, so I left it at what I saw. But Mike had heard what the guy said as well.
So Mike looks at me and says “what did you eat this morning?” Well that was easy. I had my green protein smoothie, and oats with almond milk and maple syrup, which is what I have most mornings. Mike’s response? “Good, that’s what I wanted to hear… let’s do this!”
The importance of a good breakfast
It only took me 40 years to learn this (mostly because I am stubborn and had some really bad habits), but breakfast is the most important meal of the day. As well, if you work out in the morning like me, you have to ensure you are getting the proper nutrients and energy you need to not only jump start your metabolism in the morning, but to get you through that workout.
After I get back from the gym, I like to have another smoothie, and have a snack before lunch. My snack usually consists of unsalted pumpkin and sunflower seeds, hummus and Mary’s Crackers, or a banana.
As well, I ensure I am well hydrated throughout the day. I use MyFitnessPal to keep track of all of the food and water I consume throughout the day.
