We get a wide range of weather in Southern Ontario, especially on the north-west side of Lake Ontario where we live. Even in the winter, we can range from a light dusting to several feet of heavy snow.
We have a 2-stage snow blower for the big, heavy snowfalls, but that is often too big for the majority of the snow accumulation that we get. When we get any accumulated snow, it’s enough that shoveling is a very tiresome activity.
When RYOBI contacted us about the RYOBI 40V 21” Brushless Snow Blower, we decided to give it a try. We hoped that it would be good for those mid-accumulation snowfalls. And it hits the mark!

Using the RYOBI 40V 21″ Brushless Snow Blower
Of course, we waited in anticipation for it to snow so we could try our new snowblower out.
Once our first snowfall arrived, we began charging the batteries and getting ready to do our test. With the quick push of a button, we were clearing snow! It’s really that easy. RYOBI 40V 21″ Brushless Snow Blower has 2 x 40v batteries that power a brushless motor that delivers GAS-LIKE POWER™.
Set up was very easy and within an hour the batteries were charged up and ready to go. They come with a partial charge but charging them fully before use is recommended.
We frequently get a lighter covering of snow, and our 2-stage snow blower is not needed. The RYOBI 40V 21″ Brushless Snow Blower clears up to 13 inches of snow without the hassle of oil or gas and throws snow up to 35 feet away. It was perfect for our first snowfall of the year — snow that we could have shoveled but it was a bit heavier and the RYOBI 40V 21″ Brushless Snow Blower made it so much easier.
Wendy found it really easy to use. It handled well, and she was able to maneuver it around our two vehicles with ease. She really loves the fact that it is battery-powered, and not self-propelled. Using the RYOBI 40V 21″ Brushless Snow Blower is an eco-friendly choice as it doesn’t use gas or oil. She will be quicker to use the RYOBI if the snow is deeper rather than shoveling.
I loved how easy it was to clear our sidewalks. As it is much easier to maneuver than our two-stage, we are able to clear the walks efficiently.
The variable speed auger can be adjusted for faster snow throwing or more run-time. With different amounts of snow, it will be good to test this to see which setting gives us the best results for varying levels of snow.
40V 5.0 Ah Lithium-ion Batteries
RYOBI 40V 21″ Brushless Snow Blower uses 40V 5.0 Ah lithium-ion batteries, which are the same batteries used in all of RYOBI’s 40V power tools. That means your batteries can be shared across your collection of power tools. How convenient is that?
The Verdict
The RYOBI 40V 21″ Brushless Snow Blower performed really well with light snow. It did well with the heavier packing snow, but struggled a bit with the heavily packed snow the snowplow left behind.
This would be a really good option if you are looking to be conscious of the environment. It does not take any gas or oil, and the batteries charge fairly quickly. As long as you are on top of a heavier snowfall, this will do the job perfectly. If you wait until a foot or more of snow falls, then you will struggle, like any snowblower this size.
It’s also a great option if storage space is a concern. The RYOBI 40V 21″ Brushless Snow Blower folds up and can be tucked away in the corner of your garage or shed.
