A Positive Food Experience at PoZ’ Restaurant & Bar in Dominica

Travel and food go hand-in-hand. Finding a great local eatery with fantastic food while wandering off the beaten path is a Canadian food lover’s dream.
Finding a local restaurant, where the owner is originally from Toronto Canada, can tell you the story of his journey to Dominica, and make you a delicious custom dish? Now that is pretty awesome.
Well, that is Troy Dixon of PoZ’ Restaurant & Bar in Calibishie Dominica.
PoZ’ Troy Dixon
Troy Dixon visited Dominica several years ago. Each trip he took to Dominica became longer and longer. As the locals got to know Troy, they started to refer to him as “PoZ”, short for positive, which clearly reflects his outlook on life.
On one of Troy’s trips back to Toronto, he was waiting in the long customs lineup customs at Pearson International Airport (YYZ), and realized that the busy lifestyle in Toronto was just too fast for him compared to how much he enjoyed the laid back Caribbean feeling of Dominica. He decided right then that this was his last time back to Toronto, and he was going to make Dominica his home.
Design your life
Adopting the credo “Design your life… Don’t let your life design you”, Troy moved to Dominica permanently in 2012, and opened up PoZ’ Restaurant & Bar in Calibishie.
What started off as a small restaurant in a remote part of the island became popular to locals, a destination for residents of other parts of the island, and a hangout for expats.
PoZ’ Restaurant & Bar
Known for custom created offerings, PoZ’ Restaurant & Bar has no official menu. Troy will give you a rundown of what he has for the day, and can custom make anything you like.
A lot of the produce Troy serves is grown right on PoZ’ property. Lettuce, cabbage, peppers, ginger, bay leaf, and lime are all grown in the garden. The seafood is all purchased from local fishermen.
Pro tip: When Troy is finished reading the specials, ask what the dish will cost before you order.
Some of PoZ’ signature dishes:
• Oxtail stew
• Bacon-wrapped plantain chips
• Fish and dasheen cakes
• Lobster in garlic butter
• Pumpkin soup
• Callaloo soup
• Curried goat
• Chatoo (squid)
Canadian influences include:
• Rib eye streaks
The burger recipe is one that Troy learned from his mom, and the rib eye streaks are sourced from Roseau.
What I Ate
I started off with Troy’s signature Callaloo soup. Made with dasheen leaves, yam, onions, celery, parsley, chive, thyme, and coconut milk. Oh gosh – this soup is delicious, and makes you want more. But alas, it was my starter, so I savoured this bowl of deliciousness, and awaited my main course.
Because both the Mahi-Mahi and the Shrimp in coconut milk sauce specials sounded absolutely amazing, I decided to try them both. I am glad I did. The fish was tender, the plump shrimp were cooked just right, and the coconut milk sauce was very tasty.
Troy knew he needed to have a drawing card for his remote location. He wanted to keep diners happy with a delicious meal, but also wanted to give them a reason to stick around for drinks at the bar. So he installed a pool, which allows people just looking to relax and enjoy a few drinks a way to cool off in the warm Caribbean weather.
