buffalo main lighthouse buffalo new york

Buffalo Main Lighthouse

Standing proudly on Lake Erie’s shore, the Buffalo Main Lighthouse is a true beacon of light for all who see it. With its octagonal limestone tower stretching 60 feet high, this lighthouse has been a crucial fixture of the city’s waterfront since 1833, and is Buffalo’s oldest structure still in its original location. Beyond its practical purpose, the beauty and craftsmanship of the lighthouse itself is truly breathtaking.

The fourth-order Fresnel lens had endured the test of time, but age and exposure had left its mark. Determined to preserve its irreplaceable beauty, a bold decision was made in 2013 to delicately remove the lens from the lighthouse. It now sits on display at the Buffalo History Museum.

Whether you’re a history buff, a lighthouse enthusiast like me, or simply someone who appreciates stunning architecture, a visit to the Buffalo Main Lighthouse is an unforgettable experience.
