A few weeks ago, I was in Montreal to work the Monteal Auto Show, or as it is known in French, Salon International de l’Auto de Montréal (SIAM).

Marc-André, one of my Quebec community managers, took me out one night to a bar for dinner, and he wanted to watch the Habs vs. Senators hockey game. I’m not a fan of either team, but I thought it would be cool to get out and check out the bar scene in Montreal. So off we went.

Station Des Sports

Marc-André chose Station Des Sports, a cool sports bar in downtown Montreal. The bar was packed. The greeter said there was only one table available. I was worried that it would be in a bad location, and we wouldn’t be able to see a TV. As soon as we walked in to restaurant area, we mind was put at ease. They had TVs everywhere!

We sat down and ordered our dinner. The game had already started.

The wager

While the Habs were still doing well, Marc-André said to me “you know the Habs are playing the Leafs this Saturday. Wanna put a wager on the game? If the Habs win, you change your social media avatars to one where you are wearing a Habs jersey. If the Leafs win, I’ll change mine to a Leafs jersey.”

Now I am not a betting man. I don’t bet on ProLine, play the lottery every week, go to casinos regularly, or go to friend’s places to play cards for money. But I figured, what the hell, it’s innocent, and fairly safe.

Let’s do it!

We shook hands. The bet was on. It is a friendly wager amongst fans. We continued to watch the game. The game took a turn for the worse, and Ottawa mounted a comeback. The fns at the bar were not happy.

I could see Marc-André’s face start to sink. His beloved Habs were losing. In the end, Montreal won in O/T.

Luckily, the Habs came back to win it in overtime.

So I left Montreal on Saturday afternoon. I got home just in time to watch the Leafs vs Habs game we had made our friendly wager on.

It was a good game, and…

The Leafs won!

I could picture Marc-André sitting in his family room, in front of his TV, with his face in his hands thinking, “I gotta wear a Leafs jersey. This is gonna hurt.”

Waiting patiently…

So I waited… I did not gloat. I did not say anything. I just waited. And then this happened a few days later:

twitter conversation

I offered to help… and Marc-André accepted. Probably not the best move on his part.

A Toronto Maple Leaf fan for a day… Marc-André!

A bet is a bet…

He lived up to it, and changed his Twitter avatar

Twitter header

So even though the bet was to have him change his avatar for just one day, the awesome will still live forever on my blog.

Cheers,
Big Daddy

never bet against the leafs in a leafs hab game.

the leafs can lose every other game in the year but they will still show up (and often beat) the habs.

  3. Funny, I lost $100 in ’93-’94 season when the Leafs played the Habs in the playoffs. They sure didn’t show up that night.
Lost on Proline this year too. Same match-up.
I have learned my lesson and won’t be betting again. Lucky they won when you bet.
