A Wonderful Family Dinner at Fionn MacCool’s Orillia Waterfront

14 Jan 2019
Disclosure: Our meal was covered by Ontario’s Lake Country. All opinions are my own.
Going away on a mini vacation is not just about where you stay, but also about the food you eat. Our Orillia getaway was all about rest and relaxation, so what better way to start it off than a home comfort meal at Fionn MacCool’s Orillia Waterfront.
We reviewed Fionn MacCool’s menu back in May of 2017. It was filled with homestyle comfort food, that honestly surprised me. It was not what I was expecting in a pub style setting.
This location is conveniently located right behind The Champlain Waterfront Hotel, where we were staying for the weekend.
Appetizers
I was super happy to see that the Mini Yorkies were still on the menu! These little bites of heaven are comfort food at its finest: Yorkshire Pudding, filled with lean ground beef, sweet green peas, corn and carrots, all simmered in rich gravy. Topped with buttermilk mashed potatoes and creamed corn. Tastes like Mom’s Shepherd’s Pie!
As part of the Friday evening special with the steak dinner, Rachel’s meal included a starter Caesar salad. A good starter portion size.
Dinner
Lauren had the Waffle’d Up Chicken Fingers: Hand-breaded chicken fingers dusted in chili-lime seasoning and served with waffle-cut fries and plum sauce. She loves her chicken fingers. The waffle fries are just an added bonus.
Rachel had the Steak & Fries: Grilled 100% Canadian steak with sautéed mushrooms, veggies and fries. Cooked to a perfect medium rare.
Wendy had the Shepherd’s Pie: 100% Canadian ground beef, green peas, corn, and carrots in a rich beef gravy covered with buttermilk mashed potatoes. Served with a house salad. Just like Mom makes!
And I had the Butter Chicken Curry: Chicken, onions and green peas simmered in a mild, creamy curry sauce. Served with jasmine rice and grilled naan bread. Enough spice for taste, but not enough to make you reach for a glass of milk.
Dessert
Rachel and Wendy shared the White Chocolate Cheesecake…
Lauren and I shared the Brownies and Ice Cream. So good!
