Raise A Glass: A Taste of the Craft Beer and Spirits scene in Philadelphia
12 Aug 2019
Disclosure: Experience was covered by Visit Philly. All opinions are my own.
A trip to Philly is not complete without visiting some of the historic tourist attractions, grabbing a famous Philly steak or cheesesteak sandwich, or for fans of the Italian Stallion, visiting the many Rocky movie filming locations around Philadelphia. But did you know that there is a bustling craft beer and spirits scene as well?
Here are some of the spots I visited on my trip to the City of Brotherly Love.
South Philly Bar & Grill
Located at the legendary 9th and Passyunk intersection, home to world-famous Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks, South Philly Bar & Grill has everything you want in a sports bar: a full range of beers on tap, a full menu to satisfy the heartiest appetites, and your favourite Philly games on the many plasmas located around the bar.
There are hints of Rocky everywhere you go in Philadelphia, and that is no different at South Philly Bar & Grill.
Top that off with a lively late-night scene and a cool outdoor patio where you can enjoy a beer and some pub fare, South Philly Bar & Grill is a must stop.
South Philly Bar & Grill is located at:
1235 E Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19147
Dock Street Cannery + Tasting Lounge
Opened in April 2007, Dock Street Cannery + Tasting Lounge is a fun space in the brewery’s garage behind the main Dock Street restaurant.
Grab drink, relax in the comfy chairs, and enjoy time with friends.
Available are draft beers, beer cocktails, cocktails made with local spirits, and draft wine.
My favorite: NiceThings BlackBerry Cream Ale – a collaboration with West Philly-based hip-hop artist Chill Moody. Brewed with flaked corn and fermented cool to give it a nice smooth taste.
Dock Street Cannery + Tasting Lounge is located at:
705 S 50th St, Philadelphia, PA 19143
This unique spot in South Philly is a former technical school circa 1938, converted into a multi-use space with a rooftop bar. A popular watering hole for locals, Bok Bar is a great place to catch a sunset over the city skyline while enjoying a drink or two. Be sure to check the weather before going… if it rains, there is not much cover.
Bok Bar is located at:
800 Mifflin St, Philadelphia, PA 19148
Independence Beer Garden
Located just across the street from the Liberty Bell in America’s most historic square mile is Independence Beer Garden, 20,000 square feet of outdoor drinking and eating space.
IBG has a great selection of beer, including Dogfish Head, Evil Genius, Yards, Victory, Flying Fish, and Conshohocken Brewing Company.
It’s a comfy spot with Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, table top and yard games, string lights, and ivy-covered pergolas. Available food includes franks in a blanket, pretzel bites, mahi mahi tacos, lamb gyros, watermelon and tomato salads, and boozy (or plain fruit) popsicles.
Independence Beer Garden is located at:
100 S Independence Mall W, Philadelphia, PA 19106
Manatawny Craft Spirits Shop & Tasting Room
Located just steps from the “singing fountain” in South Philly, Manatawny Craft Spirits Shop & Tasting Room serves specialty cocktails made with their own tequila barrel-rested rum, vodka and white whiskey at a gleaming copper-topped bar lined with salvaged barn wood.
During the day, the store is more of a tasting room where you can do flights of all of Manatawny Still Works’ spirits.
By night, the bartenders mix up unique seasonal cocktails. Regardless of the time of day, you can purchase any of Manatawny Still Works’ spirits in bottles to take home.
Happy hour is offered weekdays from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
Recommended: A flight of J. Potts Whiskey (smooth white whiskey), Maple Whiskey, Swarmbustin’ Honey Whiskey, and the Small Batch Whiskey Series.
Manatawny Craft Spirits Shop & Tasting Room is located at:
1603 E Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19148
Raise A Glass in Philadelphia!
With over 15 distilleries and 16 craftr breweries in the gretaer Philapdelphia area, there is no shortage of places to visit and torus to take. However, those Philly brewed spirits and beers are readily available at bars and restaurants across Philadelphia.
Be sure to enjoy a drink or two at one of the places mentioned above, or venture out and discover some of the many other bars and pubs that make up Philadephia’s craft beer and spirits scene.
