A Weekend Getaway to The Champlain Waterfront Hotel in Orillia

Disclosure: Our stay was covered by Ontario’s Lake Country. All opinions are my own.

We love getting away as a family. It gives us a chance to re-connect, and spend quality time. In our busy lives, with so many activities going on after work and school, quality time is essential.

For our most recent getaway, we chose Orillia as our destination. Post-Christmas shopping, great food, and relaxing were on our itinerary.

The Champlain Waterfront Hotel

We had the pleasure of staying at The Champlain Waterfront Hotel on a weekend in early January. Our family of 4 stayed in a room with two double beds. Although the room was cozy, it served its purpose for our getaway. We were there to shower, change, relax, and watch TV before heading to bed… and that is pretty much it.

Part of the prestigious Ascend Hotel Collection, The Champlain Waterfront Hotel is owned and operated by Toronto-based Sunray Group of Hotels. All 53 guest rooms boast upscale amenities, and although quite modern in look, maintain the hotel’s historic roots.

A mural in the lobby shows images from comment cards dating back to the early 1940s.

“I’ve seen how this hotel went from a boarded up building, to working with the designers on the look of the rooms, to seeing how it is coming together at present. I am very excited to see what it will look like when it is completely done.” said Sandra McGregor, Assistant General Manager of The Champlain Waterfront Hotel.

Currently, there is no elevator at The Champlain Waterfront Hotel. You need to use the stairs to access rooms above the first floor, with accessible rooms available on the ground floor. However, an elevator is on the way.

In order to maintain the integrity of the inside of the building, a new glass elevator will be constructed on the exterior, giving it a modern flair.

Future plans include a walkway from the hotel to the adjoining Fionn MacCool’s restaurant, and a spa, that will go in the space previously occupied by a sushi restaurant, just off the lobby.
