Staycation: A Weekend of Great Food and Fun Activities in Burlington
22 Nov 2019
Disclosure: Our weekend activities, experiences, and food were covered by Tourism Burlington and its partners. All opinions are my own.
LIving on the west side of Oakville, we are constantly in Burlington. We shop, dine, and do fun activities as a family. But we have never done a weekend dedicated to spending time in Burlington, to showcase some fun things to do, things to see, and good places to eat… until now.
We recently worked with Tourism Burlington to highlight some of their partners as part of a fun Burlington Staycation.
Trampolining and Rock Climbing at Rockin’ Jump
Our first stop was Rockin’ Jump. Lauren and Rachel were quite excited to get bouncing on the trampolines, and Lauren was eager to climb the rock climbing wall.
After we registered, Lauren got harnessed in and climbed the wall. She was excited that she made it to the tip, and loved rappelling down the wall.
Next we tried the stunt bag arena. Wendy loved flipping on to the big air pillow.
After that, we had a fun game of dodgeball
Then Wendy and Lauren battled on the X-Beam.
We had a fun time at Rockin’ Jump. It definitely won’t be our last time here!

Lunch at Gator Ted’s Tap & Grill
I don’t think I have ever seen as many TVs in a bar playing live sports as I have at Gator Ted’s Tap & Grill. Everywhere you look, there are big flat screen TVs with people sitting and watching their favourite sports, eating and enjoying a few pints.
As we had never been to Gator Ted’s before, we didn’t know what to expect. We did hear they are known for their wings, so we had to try them… and they were indeed good!
Rachel ordered the brisket poutine, and she said it was amazing!
Lauren loves deep fried pickles, and these ones did not disappoint.
I ordered the brisket pizza to share with everyone. It came with onion rings on top. It looks a bit over-the-top, but the flavours work well together. Really impressed!
The food was awesome! We really enjoyed our lunch at Gator Ted’s, and will definitely be back again!

Axe Throwing and Virtual Reality at Viking’s Landing
Viking’s Landing just opened their doors in mid October 2019. With a tag line like “Burlington’s Best Axe Throwing and Virtual Reality Arcade”, you can bet we had pretty high expectations! We’ve been axe throwing before, and have even tried virtual reality.
As you enter through the front doors, you can tell that Viking’s Landing is set up for a more upscale experience. It is clean, with beautiful live edge wood furniture and barnboard accents.
There are 10 axe throwing lanes, with a seating area to relax when it is someone else’s turn.
On Rachel’s first throw, she got a bullseye!
From there, we headed upstairs to try out the Virtual Reality Arcade. Lauren got right into it and destroyed some zombies.
We had a fun unleashing our inner viking warriors! It really is a fun place, and would be suitable for not only family outings, but group events, corporate events, team building, and leagues.

Wicked Awesome Tour and Tasting at Nickel Brook Brewing Co.
Our next stop was a tour and tasting at Nickle Brook Brewing Co., Burlington’s own craft beer brewery. Located on Drury Lane, this brewery has a tasting room that serves all of their beers. You can also buy any of their prepackaged beers here, or get a growler filled with your favourite brew.
As always, when doing tasting tours like this, I always recommend one person not indulging so you have a designated driver to get you home or to your next destination safely. In this case, I was that designated driver. Wendy loves beer, so this stop was all for her… or so I thought.
Owner John Romano gave Wendy and I a tour of the facility, and talked about the history of Nickle Brook.
After the tour, we went up to the tasting room so Wendy could try some of their beers. John prepared a flight for Wendy, that consisted of 4 beers: Thrashin’ Passion, In This Corner, Kentucky Bastard, and Raspberry Uber.
So that we didn’t feel left out, John poured me and the girls a glass of his famous craft root beer, which we all really enjoyed. I also tried the ginger beer, which was quite delicious.

Family Style Dinner at Studebaker
We’ve been to Studebaker many times for lunch and dinner, so we knew we were in for a great experience. Except this time, they decided to surprise us with a little something they have been working on… family style dinner.
They started us off with a delicious root vegetable soup and fresh buns.
Next came the main dishes – roasted potatoes, mashed potatoes, and roasted veggies.
And roasted chicken…
And beef tenders. Tender is an understatement! So good!
For dessert, they baked us an apple pie. You can’t get any better than that!
What an experience! I love that they tried this out on us, and it was pretty awesome seeing the tables around us look on.
Studebaker is one of our favourite restaurants to go to, whether it is for a meal, or just to go have apps and drinks while watching a hockey game.

“Legally Blonde: the Musical” at Drury Lane Theatre
Drury Lane Theatre is a small community cabaret style theatre showcasing variety shows and musicals. Their newly renovated theatre includes a fully licenced bar.
We saw “Legally Blonde: The Musical”, and it was fantastic! The singing was amazing! If you are a fan of the 2001 comedy film starring Reese Witherspoon, you will love this production.
You will laugh, cry, and relate to Elle and many of the characters in this musical. Definitely worth seeing.
We were quite excited to see one of our friends, Brian Vaughan, in the show as “Callahan”. As well, MMMMM was one of her choreohgraphers for Aladdin Jr this past summer. What a small world!
If Legally Blonde is no longer playing, I encourage you to check out another production at Drury Lane. It’s an intimate sport to see some amazing variety shows and musicals. This is a fun night out for people of all ages!
Note: The taking of photographs and the recording of video are not allowed during the performance.

Lunch at The Coop Wicked Chicken
Our first stop of the second day was lunch at The Coop in downtown Burlington. Know for their “tasty as cluck” chicken, we were looking forward to trying out some dishes.
There were games you could play while waiting for your food to be prepared.
We ordered some deep fried tempura deviled eggs. Oh my, they were delicious!
The nachos had were great, with a lime aioli sauce drizzle.
Our main dish was a chicken slider with a side of fries, coleslaw, and mac’n’cheese bites.
Overall, the food was really good, and we would definitely go back again!

Experiencing ”Part of the Machine: Rock & Pinball” at Joseph Brant Museum
I remember dropping off the girls for Girl Guide events at Joseph Brant Museum in the Historic Brant House a few years ago. Since then, they built a beautiful new addition that opened in September 2019, with new galleries, workshop rooms, and a gift shop. The Historic Brant House is still there, and is currently being used for administration offices.
We were quite excited to experience the Canadian premiere of “Part of the Machine: Rock & Pinball” exhibit, on loan from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. This is the first exhibit to appear in the new Showcase Gallery at the Joseph Brant Museum.
This is an interactive exhibit, and you are allowed to play the pinball games. We all picked a game and played.
I loved that hey had the electric chair from Alice Cooper’s stage performances…
And KISS’ drum kit.
We had a lot of fun exploring the exhibit. We also got to spend some time walking through the rest of the museum,, and seeing the history of Burlington and Joseph Brant.
1240 North Shore Blvd East, Burlington, ON L7S 1C5
The exhibition runs from October 6th to January 12th.
Entry to ”Part of the Machine: Rock & Pinball” is included in the cost of regular museum admission: $10/adult, $6/children, $8/senior/student, free for children under 3.
Visiting the Botanical Train Display at Royal Botanical Gardens
Holiday traditions are alive at Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington!
Christmas decorations are up, the snow is on the ground, and families are enjoying the festivities!
Lots of crafts for sale at the shop – great gift ideas!
The Botanical Train Display is amazing! We have been to RBG before, but never to see the model trains.
This gigantic model train display has over seven tons of cedar slabs, 3000 pounds of rock, 250 feet of track, and several trains working their way around different paths. It is quite impressive!
The RBG Express is also a fun activity you can do with your family. You can schedule a ride to and from Santa’s Cabin as part of RBG’s North Pole Experience.

An Afternoon of Bowling at Splitsville
Splitsville is Burlington’s newest entertainment facility. I say entertainment, because they are more than just bowling. 24 lanes of bowling including VIP lanes with comfy seating, as well as an arcade area, laser tag, and fully licensed bar and lounge.
We had a fun afternoon of bowling planned.
The kids all had a great time. Many laughs were shared, a few strikes, lots of spares, and some quality family time.
