Florida Keys: Breakfast With The Roosters at Blue Heaven in Key West

15 Jun 2018
Disclosure: Our food was covered by The Florida Keys. All opinions are my own.
Blue Heaven
Located in the historic Bahama Village area of Key West is Blue Heaven, a casual eatery featuring indoor and outdoor dining. The cuisine is American meets Caribbean, and the vibe is Florida meets Hippie.
Many years ago, this building hosted cock fighting, gambling, and Friday night boxing matches refereed by Ernest Hemingway.
From their humble beginnings in 1992, free spirits Suanne and Richard served beans, rice and fish to lunch customers in the outdoor courtyard, which is paved with slate pool table tops from the days the downstairs part of the building operated as a pool hall. Roosters and cats walk freely around in the courtyard.
Head Chef David
Hailing from Long Island New York, Head Chef David has spent most of his life living in the Florida Keys. He started as the Sous Chef in 2008, and took a hiatus in 2012 to work “farm to table” in the Catskills and Finger Lakes area of New York State. Chef David returned to Blue Heaven and became head chef. He strives for locally driven food, and has added his personal flair to Blue Heaven’s already awesome menu. “Good food brings people together and teaches us to understand different cultures.” We agree! Clean and highly developed flavours, with an emphasis on fermentation, spice and authenticity.
What I Ate
We stopped in for a quick breakfast before taking in the sites of Key West by scooter. Parking is limited at Blue Heaven, so they suggest either taxi, walking, cycling, or riding a rental scooter.
One of my favourite breakfast dishes is eggs Benedict. I have had so many varieties, and none of them have been bad. Blue Heaven offers many types, but I was there for one – the Lobster Benedict. It was a toss up between Key West Pink Shrimp and Lobster. I had eaten so many Pinks in the days I was in the Florida Keys, I wanted to try the lobster… and I am glad I did. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the Hollandaise was on point, and there was a ton of fresh lobster meat on it. I got bacon on the side… because bacon. Served with fresh fruit to try to keep things a bit healthy.
To finish off my incredible breakfast, I had a slice of “mile high” Key lime pie. Blue Heaven’s Key lime pie is well known in the Florida Keys, and referred by some as the best slick of Key Lime pie they have ever had. It was a nice mixture of sweet and tart, topped with a mountain of merengue. Simply delicious!
