If you’ve been inspired by shows like The Home Edit lately, you’ve probably been wanting to find ways to transform your own home for the better. And one thing you need to do before you can make big changes is to declutter.

Decluttering can seem like a huge, never-ending task. But when you’ve done it right, and developed some new habits to go with it, your home will stay clutter-free for good.

Are you ready to make a start? Here are some top tips for banishing the clutter.

Work out what you want to achieve

When it comes to decluttering, you need to have an end goal in mind. What do you want to achieve? A cleaner, neater home? A wardrobe full of timeless clothes you can wear season after season? Noting down your goals will give you some idea of what you need to make your home clutter-free.

It will also help if you write down a list of what needs doing and setting aside some time to declutter room by room until you’re done.

Get sorting

You need to be ruthless when decluttering. This means going into every room and sorting through everything. You need to decide what you’re going to keep and what needs to go.

Where your clothing is concerned, one useful approach is to say goodbye to anything that hasn’t been worn in over a year. You can also consider getting rid of things that no longer fit or are worn and damaged.

Decide what you’re going to do with the clutter

Once you’ve decided what you want to keep, you need to look at what’s left and what you’re going to do with it. There are some items you could sell, while others you can donate and recycle. There might be some items that you want to keep but don’t necessarily want in your home year-round. Items like garden furniture, Christmas decorations, etc., could be kept in affordable storage units until you need them. There are a lot of great schemes for out there to help you get rid of your unwanted clutter without simply putting everything in the trash.

Adopt new habits

Once your home is clutter-free, you need to start working on keeping it that way. Some of the things you can do to deal with clutter permanently include:

• Have a ‘one-in, one-out’ policy for clothing items. This will stop your closet from becoming unmanageable.
• Find a home for everything – storage boxes and containers are ideal for keeping your home clutter-free, making it easier to keep it clean.
• Aim to be more sustainable. A more sustainable way of living will help you waste less and think twice about what you buy in the future.

With the right approach to keeping your home clutter-free, you can enjoy a neat, organized home that will give even The Home Edit a run for its money.
