Some people don’t believe that such a thing as an obese dog exists. If a human being can put on too much weight, so can a dog. As you can imagine, most people’s dogs don’t have much self-control when it comes to food. If it’s there, they’ll eat it; it’s as simple as that!
You’re likely reading this blog post today because you’re worried that your dog has piled on the pounds, but you’re unsure what to do about it. Today you will learn about five simple ways to improve an obese dog’s weight. Here’s what you need to know:
1. Visit Your Veterinarian
The first thing you need to do is schedule an appointment with your veterinarian and have your dog checked out by them. It’s easy to assume that a dog becomes obese or overweight due to its lifestyle.
However, the cause might be down to a medical condition, such as a hormone imbalance, an illness, neutering, and even psychological issues. Visiting your veterinarian with your canine companion will help rule those issues out before making any lifestyle changes.
2. Feed Your Pet Natural Dog Food
Having the right diet is absolutely essential to ensuring your dog eats the right food each day. As you’ll have noticed, many dog food products exist on the market these days, so you must ensure you buy the right one for your dog.
It makes sense to invest in the best natural dog food for your furry friend, so they don’t put on weight, and they have healthy teeth, bones, muscles, and digestion.
3. Stop Feeding Your Dog Leftovers
The problem with dogs is if you give them some of your meal leftovers once or twice, they come to expect it as part of their eating routine. Moreover, many dog owners will feel guilty for not giving their pets any unwanted food.
It’s time to take a hard stance on the subject and refuse to give your dog any leftovers. Doing so is being kind to them because you aren’t actively contributing to their obesity problem.
4. Give Your Dog Plenty of Exercise
It doesn’t matter what breed of dog you’ve got. What does matter is you give your canine companion enough exercise each day. A walk around the block once or twice a day is enough to keep their weight at management levels.
If you’ve got a backyard, ensure there’s plenty of space in it so your dog can run around in it, and you can play games with them such as ‘fetch.’
5. Cut Down on the Snacks
Lastly, apart from feeding your dog natural food each day, you should limit the snacks they get between meals. Again, dogs can come to expect snacks as rewards for doing the simplest of things.
Instead, you should reward your dog with praise or playtime. Use dog treats sparingly, and where possible, opt for healthy treats rather than ones packed with fat and little to no nutrients.
Cheers,
Big Daddy
