If you’re new to the world of gardening, it can all seem a little bit complicated. Perhaps you’ve just bought your first house with a beautiful backyard, or maybe you’re just fed up with your tired old outdoor space.

Whatever your reasons, there is no reason to be worried. You don’t have to remember the latin names for all the flowers or understand complicated concepts like soil acidity just yet. Nor do you need a masters degree in landscaping or environmental science. It’s perfectly easy to create a beautiful garden just by knowing the basics.

To help you on your journey, here are five great gardening tips for beginners.

Get to know your garden

Before you can begin transforming your backyard, you need to understand it. For example, is it south-facing or north-facing? Knowing little things like where the sun hits the ground in the morning or which parts are permanently in shade will help you decide what to plant and where. Find out the soil type, as well as what is growing already. This will help you when you come to start planning.

Pick up the right tools

Gardening doesn’t have to be an expensive hobby, but there are a few pieces of equipment you’ll need in order to begin. Plants need water to survive, so a hose and watering can are crucial. You’ll be getting down and dirty in the soil so you’ll also need a good pair of gardening gloves, a trowel and some clothes you don;t mind getting filthy. Start with the basic kit and as your knowledge increases, you will sporadically pick up all the extra tools and supplies you need.

Plan out your space

It’s not a good idea to just start planting flowers and see what happens. You want to make the best possible use of your space, particularly if you only have a small garden. Draw up a diagram of your yard and come up with a grand plan for how you want it to look. This will enable you to be more organized as well as matching colors and types of plant for a better overall appearance.

Tidy up

When starting your gardening journey, it’s best to start with a blank slate. Spend some time clearing up your backyard and getting rid of anything you don’t need. This might mean clearing out old lawn furniture, raking leaves, and weeding. Only once it is completely clear can you begin.

Start small

Rome wasn’t built in a day. You can’t suddenly expect to become a master horticulturist overnight. You need to start small, with easy projects, and work your way up. Take some time to learn the most common plants and flowers, and a few different gardening techniques. Read books and watch online tutorials on the subject and you will gradually pick up more skills and knowledge. With time, you will become more and more green-fingered and eventually your garden will be a wonder to behold. Be patient and all your hard work will pay off.
