25 Apr 2018
When people meet each other for the first time, they usually do two or three things. The first thing they do is say “Hi”, and smile at each other. The next usually involves a handshake, but sometimes the first two actions are enough.
There’s a saying that “First Impressions Last”, and just by saying hello and showing off that smile, people will think positively or negatively on what they see first. Most of the time, when people smile, it’s the colour of their teeth that they notice first.
5 Easy and Natural Ways to Whiten Your Teeth
For some of us, yellow might be a healthy and natural colour for our teeth. Like it or not, people will feel uncomfortable if they see a set of teeth that’s yellowish. That statement is why people spend a lot of money in whitening their teeth. That isn’t always the case, as there are more affordable and more natural ways to whiten those pearly whites. Here are five of them.
Brushing with Baking Soda
Chemically known as NaHCO3, Sodium bicarbonate, or sodium hydrogen carbonate, Baking Soda has a lot of natural whitening properties. Its chemical composition, and whitening ability, is the reason why a lot of toothpaste manufacturers include Baking Soda in their recipes.
Baking Soda is a mild abrasive, which can help in a big way, by scraping away stains on your teeth. To use baking soda to whiten our teeth, mix two teaspoons of water with a teaspoon of baking soda. When it forms a paste-like substance, put it on your toothbrush and proceed with brushing your teeth using the baking soda paste.
Although you won’t notice the whitening effects immediately, continue brushing with your baking soda paste a few times every week, and you’ll start seeing your yellow teeth slowly transitioning into pearly whites.
Gargling with Apple Cider Vinegar?
Before you have any wild reactions from gargling using vinegar, it’s a known fact that Apple Cider Vinegar has long been used as a disinfectant and a natural cleaning substance. Acetic acid is the main component of most vinegar solutions, which is very good in killing off any bacteria.
However, as good as it sounds, Acetic acid is still acid. Acids can quickly dissolve the enamel of your teeth, leading to soft and sensitive teeth. This fact is the reason why a lot of people don’t use Apple Cider Vinegar on a daily basis.
A safe way of using Apple Cider Vinegar without eroding your teeth is by diluting it with water and swishing it around your mouth. After a few minutes of vigorous gurgling and swishing, rinse it out with plain water and gargle another glass to make sure that there’s no trace of the acid left behind.
Oranges and Lemons
Don’t be fooled by the innocent looks of oranges and lemons. They contain significant amounts of vitamin C, or citric acid, which is useful in killing most bacterias. Like Acetic acid, Citric acid can also erode the enamel of your teeth. A natural way of avoiding too much acidity is by incorporating decent amounts of oranges and lemons in your diet.
Peelings from both fruits are also effective scrubs to use on your teeth. Just rinse with water afterwards, so there will be no excessive acid build ups in your mouth.
Gargling with Oil?
Another unique and strange way of whitening your teeth is by gargling with oil. Although somewhat outlandish and weird, using oil to whiten teeth has been around for quite some time. India and it’s ayurvedic leaning people use oil as a natural way to clean and whiten teeth. It’s safe, clean, and easy to obtain.
By tradition, Indians use sunflower or sesame oil to whiten their teeth. In a more western setting, a lot of people prefer using coconut oil, because it tastes and smells better. Coconut oil also has high concentrations of lauric acid, which reduces inflammation, and is a good antiseptic.
To use oil as a gargle, use one tablespoon of coconut oil and put it in your mouth. Utilizing a pushing and pulling method through your teeth, gargle and swish it around for at least 10-15 minutes. Oil gargling, or pulling as it’s known to some, is the most effective and safe method. It does not have material that can erode the enamel of your teeth.
Some people may find this surprising, but smoking can cause staining in your teeth. Not only will you have bad breath, but smoking is dangerous, and can lead to not only the yellowing of your teeth, but to other health issues in the rest of your body.
Cigarettes have a lot of harmful and unnatural chemicals in them that can stain your teeth. Nicotine and Tar, which are the main components in cigarettes, are notorious for quickly staining your teeth into a yellowish-brown colour. Stop smoking, and you’ll eventually see the health benefits of it in the long run. Your teeth will thank you!
A lot of people want their teeth to look white and clean. Dentists are good at Teeth Whitening, which is a good choice for a lot of people who can afford this option. However, there are also a lot of natural ways and methods for whitening your teeth. Using baking soda, apple cider vinegar, orange peels, coconut oil, or just by quitting that bad smoking habit, you can whiten your teeth in no time.
However, do not underestimate the benefits of regular brushing and flossing your teeth. Combine it with the methods above, and you’ll have teeth that are not only pearly white, but strong and healthy as well.
