It’s no secret that the Rocky movie franchise is one of my favourites.
From the build up in the 1976 original movie, to him winning the world heavyweight title in the second movie, to seeing Mr T and Hulk Hogan in the third movie, to his showdown with the Russian Ivan Drago in the fourth movie, to training and then battling Tommy Gunn in the fifth installment… there was no shortage of action and emotion. The sixth movie Rocky Balboa wrapped up Rocky’s career.
The franchise would have an unexpected extension with the announcement of Creed. Later, Sylvester Stallone said it would be a new franchise built around Adonis Creed (Apollo’s son), where he would play Adonis’ trainer and mentor.
If you haven’t seen these movies, get on it! They are so well done, and show the life and passion of Rocky’s journey through his adult life as a pro boxer.
If you have seen the movies, here are some of the movie filming locations in Philadelphia.

Probably the most popular cheesesteak sandwich joint for tourists in Philly, Pat’s King of Steaks has been known to sell upwards of 6000 cheesesteak sandwiches on a busy Saturday. Fans of 1976’s “Rocky” movie may recognize Pat’s as where Rocky and loan shark Tony Gazzo had a bite to eat. There is a plaque on the wall that says, “On this spot stood Sylvester Stallone filming the great motion picture Rocky. Nov. 21, 1975”.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art plays host to two elements of Rocky lore… the stairs he runs up, and the iconic Rocky statue.
Ever since I saw Rocky III in 1983, I wanted to visit Philadelphia to see the bronze statue of Rocky Balboa. That dream came true when I was in the City Of Brotherly Love.
I also jogged up the famous stairs that Rocky ran at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was tough, and quite a hot morning. Once at the top, I celebrated this victory, and knocked another item off my bucket list.
These two ladies from Virginia also climbed the Rocky steps, and wanted to pose with me at the top to celebrate!

26. Adrian’s
In the fifth movie, Rocky is seen running his own restaurant, which he named after his wife Adrian. The actual restaurant used in the movie is The Victor Café. In probably one of the best scenes of the franchise, Rocky gives his son Robert the speech about winning:
“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that! I’m always gonna love you no matter what. No matter what happens. You’re my son and you’re my blood. You’re the best thing in my life. Enjoy Visiting the Rocky Filming Locations
There were a lot more filming locations outside of Philadelphia. Los Angeles is prominent in several on the movies, as was Las Vegas in Rocky Balboa for the Italian Stallion’s last fight against heavyweight champ Mason Dixon. In Rocky IV, Mormon Row in Moose Wyoming portrayed the snowy Russian countryside where Rocky lived and trained for his Christmas Day showdown with Ivan Drago.
Please remember that some of the locations listed above are private homes, where people currently live. It’s not like the people now living there don’t know their homes were in the movies, but it has to be annoying having tons of Rocky fans show up and be disruptive. So, be respectful, and brief. Take in the moment, snap a quick pic, and be on your way.
Enjoy your self-guided Rocky tour in Philadelphia, and be sure to pick up a steak sandwich while there.
Cheers,
Big Daddy

Great piece here! I’ve always wanted to see Philly in person but not able to do so as of yet. I had to settle on a virtual Google Maps tour. Still fun! Was surprised you could see Rocky’s house from the first movie from Marie and Steps house on Street View when you spin it around. Thanks again for the blog.
It was an amazing trip to Philly. If I had more time, I would have loved to visit all of the locations.
When you finish your cheesesteak the last place where I recommended that you go to is where Rocky took Adrian on their first date. He took her to the ice-skating rink to go ice skating. But he didn’t skate he just ended up running beside her.
The skating rink location seen in the original Rocky movie was located across the country in Santa Monica, California. Unfortunately, it no longer exists. The lot seen in the Balboa movie (that is supposed to be the location of the demolished skating rink) is a construction site for multi-level housing.
