The 2022 IONIQ 5 Preferred AWD Long Range is one of the most advanced and capable electric vehicles on the market. Put simply, this model is one of the most cutting-edge vehicles around which will provide years of practical yet luxurious motoring pleasure.
This being my first fully electric vehicle review, I did have some range anxiety and scoped out some level 3 chargers in the area. I was disappointed to see that most of the ones located within 30 minutes of me were out of service. Luckily, I found a few in Cambridge at the ONroute that were functional, which was only an hour’s drive away. I also got acclimated with EV Apps ChargePoint, Ivy, PlugShare, and FLO to help with my week in the IONIQ 5 and for future EV reviews.
Let’s take a closer look at the 2022 IONIQ 5 Preferred AWD Long Range.
When it comes to the exterior of the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5, this fully electric crossover packs a lot of style. From its unique headlight design to its side profile, the IONIQ 5 boasts a sleek, modern look that looks more like a sleek concept car than an everyday vehicle. The aerodynamic exterior has been carefully crafted for maximized efficiency on the road and helps keep energy costs down.
It was really difficult to see where Hyundai was going with the design of this vehicle. Depending on who you talk to, they either love or dislike the modern meets retro look. I’m closer to the love side, as I think it is much different than anything on the market with its modern styling and overall aesthetic appeal.
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a great choice for those seeking a luxurious interior. Its spacious cabin offers plenty of head and legroom for occupants in every seat, while its premium materials give it an extra level of comfort. This is super important to me as I am tall and need the head and leg room. The position of the B-pillar does not get in the way of entering or exiting the vehicle, which for a bigger guy is a big bonus. The interior of the IONIQ 5 is incredibly quiet thanks to extra insulation dampening outside noise and wind turbulence created from driving at different speeds. On top of all this, the generous cargo space makes the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 ideal for travelers or families looking for getaways.
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is engineered with power, handling and performance at the forefront of its features. This new offering from Hyundai has been developed with the latest in electric vehicle technology, crafted to perform superbly on all terrain. Boasting an impressive range of up to 480 km per charge and a single-speed reduction gear automatic transmission with instant torque, drivers can expect a thrilling ride every time they get behind the wheel. The IONIQ 5 also offers sport mode for those that feel more in control when taking charge of the roads.
Additionally, its dual-motor setup offers an impressive output of 320 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque letting you easily get off the line faster than ever before. The bottom line: no matter what road or terrain you’re navigating, you’ll be driving with confidence when you’re behind the wheel of the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5.
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 provides a smooth, stable driving experience. With powerful torque and a low center of gravity, the IONIQ 5 harnesses the energy of an electric motor for excellent acceleration and agility on tricky terrain. It also features regenerative braking technology that automatically slows down without reducing performance or creating uncomfortable jerking motions. All-wheel drive is available to ensure a steadfast grip when faced with challenging surfaces like snow, gravel, or dirt.
All in all, the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 offers an exhilarating ride with plenty of performance-enhancing features sure to satisfy even the most demanding driver.
Fuel Economy (Efficiency)
It’s easy to see why the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Preferred AWD Long Range is one of the most efficient cars available today. Its innovative 74KW + 165KW 225HP dual electric motor paired with a powerful 77 kWh battery pack allows for an impressive range of up to 414 km on a full charge, making it an ideal car for longer road trips or commutes without worrying about running out of power. A DC Fast Charger (if you can find one that isn’t out of service) can take you from 10 to 80 percent battery charge in 18 minutes or so, and a Level 2 charger takes approximately 8.5 hours to give you a full charge. Plug in before you go to bed, and you are good-to-go in the morning.
Additionally, the IONIQ 5’s all-wheel-drive is incredibly efficient, with an output of up to 320 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque for improved acceleration and handling. The combination of power, efficiency, and affordability make the Hyundai IONIQ 5 an ideal car for anyone looking for a dependable ride.
Now if only the EV infrastructure would catch up…
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is widely anticipated as one of the most innovative and advanced electric vehicles on the market. Hyundai has always held a reputation for providing safe, reliable automobiles, so it’s no surprise that the IONIQ 5 won’t compromise on safety features. Every model comes equipped with Lane Keeping Assist to alert drivers if their vehicle drifts out of its lane, Blind-Spot Collision Warning for detecting and preventing collisions with approaching vehicles that enter blind spots, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian detection, and many other useful driver assistance systems designed to make driving safer and easier. Furthermore, the car has Remote Smart Parking Assist which can remotely park itself into tight spaces. Combined with robust airbags and vehicle structure reinforcement technology, it’s easy to see why so many people are eager to drive this revolutionary EV.
With its comfortable leather seating, and fully adjustable steering wheel, the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is an incredibly inviting car. Its interior design has been thoughtfully crafted to delivering unparalleled comfort – from the heated seats that come standard on every model to the 8-way power driver’s seat — each aspect of the IONIQ 5 is designed to make getting behind the wheel a luxurious experience. The seats are upholstered with soft leather and feature ample reclining, lumbar support, and cushioning for all-day comfort. For those who are looking for extra comfort, Hyundai also offers an optional “Relaxion” function on the driver’s seat so you can ease into your journey with ease.
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is packed with amazing technological features. From exterior cameras that can be used to spot objects and alert you if any of them are in your blindspot while driving, to a dual-screen digital display dashboard, this vehicle has all that one could need and more.
The large mid-dash 12″ touchscreen located beside the digital gauge cluster is clear and intuitive, allowing you to control the tech in the vehicle. One of the only cons I found on this vehicle was the reflection on the side window from this large panel. No matter how much I reduced the brightness, it reflected on the window causing a distraction, day or night. The second con was the absence of a much-needed rear wiper.
Remote Smart Parking Assist is a really cool feature that allows you to pull the IONIQ 5 in and out of a parking spot while you are outside your vehicle, using the controls on the key fob. On top of this, the IONIQ 5 offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a voice assistant, and multiple USB ports for your devices.
With these cutting edge features, Hyundai is truly pushing their technology forward and putting out a quality vehicle that’ll make any driver happy.
The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 offers plentiful cargo volume due to its long wheelbase, giving drivers the best of both worlds when it comes to convenience and practicality. With 59.3 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the front row seats, you can easily travel with multiple passengers, plenty of luggage, or extra cargo for your next adventure. The front trunk, or frunk, is rather small, but there is enough room in the rest of the vehicle to make up for it. The hatchback design opens up to a generous 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space, making it perfect for groceries, sports equipment, or even helping your friends move. Even with a full load of passengers, the IONIQ 5 still offers plenty of trunk space with 19 cubic feet – far more than some smaller SUVs and crossovers out there.
The 2022 IONIQ 5 Preferred AWD Long Range has a starting price of $54,999 (CAD), which is a decent price considering all you get with this vehicle that is in a class on its own. Our test model had a sticker price of $62,024 (CAD) which included the Ultimate Package ($5000).

Living on Video by Trans-X
The IONIQ 5 reminded me so much of the 80s. The retro feel with the pixelated lights made me feel like I was in a video game. Although the vehicle does look futuristic, it has that throwback to a time when 8-bit graphics were all the craze. So the synth-pop tune “Living on Video” was the perfect fit for the IONIQ 5.
“Give me light, give me action,
At the touch of a button,
Flying through hyper-space,
In a computer interface.”
I really hope you enjoyed this edition of Motor & Music featuring the 2022 IONIQ 5 Preferred AWD Long Range and Living on Video by Trans-X.
