Welcome to “11 Questions with…”. This edition’s guest is Randa Derkson.
Enjoy!
11 Questions with… Randa Derkson
1. Elevator pitch… tell us about yourself.
Hi! I’m Randa Derkson, and I’m a mother to a spirited young man. I’m also the woman behind The Bewitchin’ Kitchen. TBK is a blog mainly focused on food and health, but I love to show my travel adventures as they are something I’m passionate about. Another passion of mine to is to help bloggers grow, and with that in mind, I cofounded Click Start Club.
2. Your spouse… tell us about him.
I’ve been with my husband since I was 15 years old (it’s crazy to think about that now). He loves hockey (Vancouver Canucks is his team), fishing, and he recently found out that Disneyland is his favourite place on earth.
3. Your kids… tell us about them.
My son recently started kindergarten. He is a strong force to reckon with. He knows what he wants and it’s something I’m proud of (although I could do without the dinner time standoffs). He’s the typical boy, he plays hockey, t-ball, and loves Disney.
4. Do you have any family traditions?
One of my favourite traditions is Christmas morning. For as far back as I can remember, after we’re done opening presents we sit down for Ukrainian Breakfast. It’s so bad for you, but so good for my soul (haha). It’s poached eggs in cream, perogies in cream, and Ukrainian garlic sausage fried and simmered in (you guessed it) cream.
5. What have been your biggest challenges as a parent?
Patience. I’m the kind of person who snaps their fingers and gets things done, so patience is a trait I have been working on for this part of my life.
6. If you could pick any career in the world for yourself, what would it be, and why?
I’m happy doing what I’m doing! I love it because every day is different and I have control on when I work. There are some fields I would like to expand on in the health and fitness industry, but in due time!
7. Growing up, who inspired you the most?
This wasn’t when I was young, but when I was in high school. The character Samantha Jones from Sex and The City, not for the promiscuity but for her strength. I admired that she was her own person, knew what she wanted, had a high roller job, and didn’t apologize.
8. How do you balance work life and family life?
If someone answers this question, send it to me. I’m still working on this. I say I shut down the computer at 4, but that’s a lie. I’ll find myself working on things “after hours”.
9. What advice would your “current self” give to your “just about to have my first child” self?
Sleep! You are not lazy or a slacker if you sleep when the baby sleeps! YOU NEED THIS.
10. Has there been a piece of advice you were given about parenting that really stuck with you?
“He’s not going to be in diapers when he’s 16” – my best friend when I was stressed about potty training.
11. What advice would you give to new parents?
Sleep, the house is a mess and that’s okay – just sleep. You’re doing the best you can and that makes you a great parent.

Stay tuned for our next “11 Questions with…” feature.
Thanks for reading!
Cheers,
Big Daddy
“11 Questions with…” is an on-going feature. I will be interviewing parents with the same 11 questions, who like me, live in the digital world. The goal is to examine different perspectives, advice, challenges, and experiences from how people parent their children, and live a successful work / life / online balance.
There will be no specific frequency for this feature. It will be on-going, and filed under the “Lifestyle” tab, then “11 Questions with…” subtab, so it is easy to find.
With all the challenges of parenting these days, we could all use stories from fellow parents, who may have already gone through a similar experience, or were offered advice that you could use.
If you would like to be interviewed for an upcoming edition, please contact me at craig@bigdaddykreativ.ca.
