11 Questions with… Ladena Racine. #bdk11Qs
19 Jun 2017
Welcome to “11 Questions with…”. This edition’s guest is Ladena Racine.
I’ve known Ladena for a few years, but never met in person. Her main passions are travel (especially Hawaii), being outdoors and having fun with her family. If you have ever seen her Instagram channel, you’d know how true this is.
11 Questions with… Ladena Racine
1. Elevator pitch… tell us about yourself.
My name is Ladena Racine. I’m a mom of two, a school teacher and blogger. I live in British Columbia but am born in Ontario. I absolutely love my west coast life – we can hike outside all year long, BBQ anytime of year, spend time at the beach on our SUP board in the summer and ski in the winter. My biggest passion is travel, I always have a valid passport and am ready to take off anytime!
2. Your spouse… tell us about him.
I’ve been with my husband Neil since high school. Neil is a web designer and owns his own business in Victoria, BC.
3. Your kids… tell us about them.
I have one daughter and one son. My daughter is in grade 4 and my son in grade 1. They love camping, skiing and traveling. My daughter dances and skates. My son still hasn’t discovered his passion yet – which is just fine with us because he’s pretty awesome.
4. Do you have any family traditions?
We celebrate Chinese New Year every year. Other traditions include our annual family trip to Whistler, BC (aunts, uncles, grandma and cousins included).
5. What have been your biggest challenges as a parent?
My daughter suffers from anxiety. It has been very challenging for both my husband and I. We have sought a lot of professional help for her and are finally seeing some progress. It is heartbreaking to see your innocent child not being to enjoy life to the fullest because of a mental illness. We adore our daughter and have faith that she will get passed this.
6. If you could pick any career in the world for yourself, what would it be, and why?
My dream career is to be a full-time travel writer. I absolutely love experiencing new places and sharing my experience with others.
7. Growing up, who inspired you the most?
My father inspired me the most. He was such a positive and kind person. He was funny and loving. I still use his jokes and sing his songs to my kids all the time.
8. How do you balance work life and family life?
This is tough. I do get distracted and do feel guilty of not doing everything with my kids but I do understand that I need to follow my passion and hobbies. I make sure to spend quality time with my kids everyday but always make time for myself as well. Some days are better than others (for example, the kids get me 100% of the time when we’re on the beach in Hawaii!)
9. What advice would your “current self” give to your “just about to have my first child” self?
Don’t sweat the small stuff, everything works out. I’d also tell myself that I’m doing a good job. I don’t think moms hear this enough and it’s so important to say it.
10. Has there been a piece of advice you were given about parenting that really stuck with you?
I am sure I received lots of good advice but nothing stands out.
11. What advice would you give to new parents?
Trust your instincts and YOU’RE DOING A GREAT JOB! :)

Stay tuned for our next “11 Questions with…” feature.
Thanks for reading!
“11 Questions with…” is an on-going feature. I will be interviewing parents with the same 11 questions, who like me, live in the digital world. The goal is to examine different perspectives, advice, challenges, and experiences from how people parent their children, and live a successful work / life / online balance.
With all the challenges of parenting these days, we could all use stories from fellow parents, who may have already gone through a similar experience, or were offered advice that you could use.
If you would like to be interviewed for an upcoming edition, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
