11 Questions with… Karen Ahmed. @karenahmed #bdk11Qs
18 Dec 2017
Welcome to “11 Questions with…”. This edition’s guest is Karen Ahmed.
I could tell you all about Karen and how much of an awesome person she is, and what an amazing cook she is… but I think I’ll let this video do it for me…
I’ve just recently met Karen Ahmed through a mutual friend. I find her to be a wonderful human being, and her YouTube channel has got me wanting to better my cooking skills! Seriously, you should check it out. Just be prepared to be sitting in front of your computer for a few hours looking at all of the wonderful recipes she creates.
11 Questions with… Karen Ahmed
1. Elevator pitch… tell us about yourself.
I’m Karen Ahmed, I’m a wife, mother, blogger, youtube creator, friend, daughter, sister. I work for the Toronto Star in a full time capacity as a Revenue Operations Manager. At night and on weekends I moonlight as an innovator and recipe developer for my blog and my YouTube channel.
2. Your spouse… tell us about him.
My husband Mac of 21 years is literally the wind beneath my wings. It’s not easy to live with a partner that’s always working and he’s incredibly supportive of me reaching my goals.
3. Your kids… tell us about them.
My boys Adam & Aaron are 19 and 16. They’re great kids. Adam is at the University of Waterloo and unfortunately is on Canada’s No Fly List as a false positive. We’re working hard to get a redress system in place. Aaron is in high school and is a year away from University himself.
4. Do you have any family traditions?
From the time they were little, I’ve been making traditional Christmas sweets like we did back in India. I wanted them to love the spirit of Christmas as much as I do.
5. What have been your biggest challenges as a parent?
Feeling guilty for not spending enough time with the kids. As a working parent, you miss a lot and as the kids get older, you get to spend less and less time with them.
6. If you could pick any career in the world for yourself, what would it be, and why?
I’d love to be a recipe developer for a product I love. I’d love to make something really amazing and then move on and do it all over again!
7. Growing up, who inspired you the most?
My mom, she was the epitome of love and grace, a wonderful and gentle woman with a big heart.
8. How do you balance work life and family life?
I walk a tightrope every day. There just aren’t enough hours in the day! I’m lucky to have a job that allows me to be flexible with my work hours so I can balance my tasks. You also have to be extremely organized and run your life like a well oiled pre planned machine. Without my online calendar telling me what to do, I’d be helpless.
9. What advice would your “current self” give to your “just about to have my first child” self?
I’d advise myself not to sweat the small stuff. It’s great to have rules you think you need to follow but one size does not fit all and every child is different.
10. Has there been a piece of advice you were given about parenting that really stuck with you?
My mom always told me when I was bad, “One day, your children will be just like you!”
11. What advice would you give to new parents?
Enjoy every moment, they change so quickly. Take plenty of pictures and videos, you will look back and wonder how they were ever that small.
Get social with Karen Ahmed!
Stay tuned for our next “11 Questions with…” feature.
Thanks for reading!
“11 Questions with…” is an on-going feature. I will be interviewing parents with the same 11 questions, who like me, live in the digital world. The goal is to examine different perspectives, advice, challenges, and experiences from how people parent their children, and live a successful work / life / online balance.
With all the challenges of parenting these days, we could all use stories from fellow parents, who may have already gone through a similar experience, or were offered advice that you could use.
If you would like to be interviewed for an upcoming edition, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
